How to turn a photo into pixel art

Pick a clear subject.

Choose a pet, a flower or a favorite object. A close-up with a simple background works best. Drop in a photo or try the happy Shiba example.

Find the right amount of detail.

Move the Detail slider to make the pixels simpler or more detailed. Switch to Original to compare. Pixfun picks a matching palette automatically.

Color it or print it.

Select Color this photo to fill the numbered squares. Download a crisp PNG, or print the A4 worksheet for an off-screen coloring break.

A photo-to-color-by-number generator, too.

Every converted photo has a numbered palette. Choose Color this photo to fill matching cells with Pixfun’s pencil, bucket and other tools. Zoom in for the small squares, then watch your completed picture replay.

The printable version uses the same colors and numbers. For the difference between pixel grids, outlined printables and physical kits, read our custom color-by-number guide.

Start with a ready-made little idea.

Try a cat, donut or whale from the Pixfun collection. Each idea has a real grid, a palette and a free coloring worksheet.

Before you make your pixels

Is this image to pixel art converter free?

Yes. You can convert a photo, color the numbered grid, save the pixel art PNG and download an A4 worksheet for free. You do not need an account.

Does Pixfun upload my photo?

No. Conversion and downloads happen in your browser. When you start coloring, the pixel puzzle and progress are kept in that browser tab if storage is available. They are not sent to Pixfun or synced to the mobile app.

Can I turn a photo into color by number?

Yes. Choose a photo, adjust the Detail slider, then select Color this photo. Pixfun chooses the colors automatically and gives each one a number. The A4 worksheet uses the same numbered grid and color key.

How much detail should I use?

Move the Detail slider left for bigger, simpler pixels or right for a more detailed picture. The grid ranges from 16×16 to 96×96 and starts at 52×52. Pixfun picks the colors automatically. A4 worksheets use one page up to 32×32, four sections up to 64×64 and nine sections for larger grids.

Why does my photo look different after conversion?

Pixfun crops the center of your photo to a square, turns it into a grid, and combines similar colors. Switch between Original and Pixel art to compare them. A close-up subject with a simple background stays clearest. Increase the detail or crop your photo before choosing it if the subject looks too small.

Which photos can I use?

Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP image up to 10 MB and 24 megapixels. On a computer, you can also drag the file into the photo area. Export HEIC photos as JPG first. The happy Shiba example is ready to try before you choose your own photo.

Is this an AI pixel art generator or a paint-by-number outline maker?

This converter simplifies the photo you choose into colored squares. It does not generate a new scene or create smooth outlined painting regions. Pixfun’s mobile AI Studio is a separate feature for making coloring puzzles from text prompts.
